Dr. Diana Diazh joining UA Department of Computer Science!
Welcome new Associate Professor of Practice!
Dr. Diana Diazh will be joining the Department of Computer Science faculty in fall 2024. We asked Dr. Diazh to answer our "Getting to know you" questions. Responses below.
Educational background/short bio:
I received my M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Wayne State University in 2020, where I have taught Computer Organization, Database Systems, Discrete Mathematics, Bioinformatics, and Analysis of Algorithms. After graduation, I taught Computer Organization, Intro to Data Science, and Database Systems at the University of Illinois Chicago.
Research interests:
My work lies in the areas of medical informatics, applied ML, and AI on one hand, and applied computer science education on the other. My most recent work studies how underrepresented CS students benefit from participating in research projects early in their careers.
Why did you apply to join the University of Arizona Department of Computer Science?
The University of Arizona has one of the best Computer Science departments in terms of academic quality with top professors and instructors. Being part of this vibrant community, surrounded by brilliant minds, will undoubtedly have a positive impact on my professional growth. Additionally, the highly qualified and motivated students at UA will inspire me to continually strive for excellence. Moreover, I cannot wait to live in warm and sunny Tucson.
What made you interested in pursuing a career in higher education/the academy?
As a professor, I am deeply committed to student success. My passion lies in guiding and mentoring students, fostering collaboration with colleagues, and making a positive impact beyond the classroom. I believe that higher education is not only about disseminating knowledge but also about shaping future professionals who contribute to society. Being part of this dynamic academic community allows me to continue my unique intellectual and personal journey while inspiring others to thrive.
What are you looking forward to most in coming to UA?
I am eager to engage with fellow professors and to interact with the diverse and motivated student body at UA, I look forward to fostering meaningful connections and helping students achieve their goals. Being part of UA means being part of the broader Tucson community, and I am looking forward to learning about Tucson's history, geography, gastronomy, and nature. I am enthusiastic about engaging in outreach, mentorship, and initiatives that extend beyond the classroom. Whether it’s collaborating with local organizations or participating in community events, I aim to make a positive difference and enjoy all that Tucson has to offer - specially food.s.
Any other information you would like students, staff, faculty, alumni, etc. to know about you.
I like biking and exercising outdoors. I like to try different sports at least once even though I am not very good at any of them. As a consequence I have been in soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and even rugby (amateur) teams. I like to volunteer at animal shelters and walk my dog.
